As on Monday, June 8th 2020 faculty have submitted 100 testimonials about librarian impact.
I worked with our area librarian to develop a new assignment and accompanying workshop for my class. Student feedback on the assignment (especially the workshop, which was taught in the library by our librarian) was extremely positive. Many students said that the library workshop was essential in preparing them not only for this assignment, but for future research assignments in this and other classes. In addition, I noticed a very pronounced improvement in student performance on this and subsequent assignments (suggesting they were building on what they learned). None of this would be possible without the hard work of our librarians!!
The DREAM Lab team has been invaluable in supporting Geography Department teaching by coordinating and running the DREAM Lab and providing it for education and community events such as hosting GIS day and Cartography final presentations. GIS day, which was made possible by the library DREAM Lab team, led to at least two students getting hired in full time positions upon their graduation.
The Science Librarian regularly guest teaches two essential sessions on research methods for my WR 123: Written Reasoning in the Process of Research and WR 320: Scientific and Technical Writing classes. Her work is absolutely integral to my classes and the research projects that my students work on over the course of the quarter. She models efficient and effective use of library databases, teaching students how to optimize searches to locate both major sources in their disciplines and others that are highly specific to their topics.
The Government Information Librarian at the Knight Library, was instrumental in helping me find the very nuanced government information I needed while I worked as a research assistant for Peter Laufer — professor and author here at the University of Oregon. She helped me find deeply buried congressional vote records as well as a government publication from the 1950s. I couldn’t have completed my work without her.
